Basically both countries speak English. And that's basically where the similarities end.
Australian is a much newer language than the USA in that Australia is almost 100 years younger than the USA.
Some regional accents occur in Autralia but nowhere near the amount of the American accents.
Another difference is the Australian Slang or Rhyming Slang. This method of rhyming two words to take the place of one word or phrase has its roots in "Cockney" London. It is very confusing to Americans although my wife has picked it up pretty well.
Some examples are:
The Fridge is the "ridgey didge" Fridge rhymes with "didge" The usage would be "Put the milk in the ridgey didge."
The Pub is the "rubbidy dub" Pub rhymes with "dub" The usage would be "Let's have a beer at the rubbidy dub."
Sometimes the rhyming slang is shortened and this can further confuse Americans. Thus the "rubbidy dub" is often referred to as the "rubbidy"
